The story mainly talks about the life of Guadalupe Quintanilla. It describes the trials and tribulations she had to face as child growing up and even as a woman. As a child she was tested to be retarded, she had a IQ of sixty-four. Which means she wasn’t even teachable according to her test scores. Her teachers treated her as if she was a baby. When she was twelve she was put into a class with six year olds, where they teased her for being so old. When she was sixteen she married a Mexican American dental technician. She gave birth to three children. Victor, Mario, and Martha all tested retarded, and were put into a program called yellow birds for kids that were slow at learning. Lupe blamed herself for everything her kids went threw. Soon after that Lupe became tired of feeling sorry for herself, and sought out to find education some how some way. Since she was so determined and persistent she finally got a chance at college because the registrar admired her determination. College started off hard at first for her, but she still manage to get threw it. Before she knew it she graduated with a associate degree in biology, after that she further her education and received a master’s degree in Spanish literature. Her children also followed in her foot steps, Mario became a physician, Victor and Martha became lawyers. In closing Lupe can happily say that those test were incorrect.
