The Effects of Slavery
When someone thinks of the word slavery a lot comes to mind like pain, suffering, misery, and redemptions. Slavery has had a major impact on everyone especially African Americans. Slavery has been around since the English colonist settled in Virginia, but luckily slavery was ended by the thirteen amendment. (“Slavery in the United States“) Before that there were many effects that started slavery and ended it. Like for example financial issues, a civil war, feuds between black and white people, slave rebellion, and problems with society today.
First and for most how slavery began and the results of it. According to the article Slavery in the United States the English colonist wanted to pay for the transporting of people using labor. So they had slaves the majority of them were black and some were native Americans. Soon after that slavery became legal in the united states because of tobacco culture slavery labor in tensed. The majority of slave holder lived in the southern part of the united states. Slaves engaged in machine-like gang systems of agriculture. Out of 15 states and a population of 12 million there was about four million slaves. Since there were so much slaves the wealth of the united states grew greatly. But both the north and south part of the united states didn’t agree on the same thing so as a result of that a civil war began. (“Slavery in the United States “)
One other effect of slavery was the civil war. The civil war began when the north and south states disagreed about slavery. The people in the south felt they should still have slavery. Also known as the confederate states of America. According to the article Confederate States of America the confederate states consisted of these states South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, Texas, and many others. Southern states natives believed in white supremacy so they felt it was nothing to have slaves, and to sell people like they were things not humans. The northern states natives didn’t approve slavery anymore because they didn’t feel it was necessary anymore. The people in the north believed that people should be treated equally and have rights like every other human on the world. So all the free slaves traveled over to the north states like Maine, Missouri, Iowa, and many others. Free slaves felt they would have a better life in the those states, so that’s where they went to start there own businesses and actually work for money. (“Confederate States of America“) There were many slaves like Harriet tubman that escaped from slavery along with many others and made a better life in the northern states where things were different. (“Harriet Tubman”) The war broke out on April 1891,began at the battle of fort summer, in South Carolina. The south put up a good fight but lost the war to the northern states. it took a decade for reconstruction, all the free men were given rights and all confederate state leaders were expelled from office. (“Confederate States of America“)
Slavery caused a lot of problems, one major effect of slavery was feuds between black and white people. Since the majority of slaves were African Americans and their slave masters were white those two races collide all the time.
After slavery was abolished by the thirteenth amendment African Americans got their freedom, but the respect didn’t come with it. Although African American were given rights after slavery ended white Americans still didn’t respect them. They didn’t feel they deserved there respect because they use to be slaves. As a result of that it became another fight for equality, but eventually African Americans got the respect and equal rights that was well deserved threw protesting, marching, and speeches. (“Confederate States of America“)
An additional effect of slavery was slave rebellion. Since some slave masters
treated their slaves so harshly, slaves that couldn’t take it decide to fight back.
Women slaves were raped, male slaves that were rebellious were whipped. One of
the greatest slave rebellion was on the ship Amistad. (Abraham) Slaves were
captured from Africa, taken away from there villages , and traded by their
own people for guns and many other things. The slaves were kidnapped from the
neighborhood of Colony of Sierra and sold to Spanish holders. The treatment was
harsh and very bad. The slaves on the ships were literally stacked on top of each
other naked. Woman slaves gave birth in those harsh conditions. The slave revolt on
the ship began on the way to Puerto. A couple of slaves that were just recently
whipped were not chained up, they found some knives in the cargo hold and decided
to start a revolt. The slaves that were apart of the revolt killed the cook, one of the
other masters, and one another Spanish master was left wounded to drive the ship
back to Africa. So on there way back to Africa the slaves were recaptured by an American ship. The slaves on the ships were taken to the u.s. where slavery was no
longer legal. So the fight for the slaves began, they were taken threw three trials until
they finally won there freedom and was sent back to Africa. As a result of the Amistad
case a civil war started, and a foundation of the American Missionary Association in
1846 which was the largest and best organized abolitionist society in the United
States before the outbreak of the Civil War, All Inspired by the Amistad case. After
the War the Association established more than five hundred schools and colleges in
the South and in the border states for the education of newly liberated blacks. These
schools evolved into Atlanta, Howard, Fisk, and Dillard Universities; Hampton
University; Talladega College and many others. (Abraham)
For many people slavery still has effected society today. Although slavery
ended a long time ago it still plays a big roll in society. For example because of slavery
when ever the word “nigger” is said it causes a lot contrversary. The reason why is
because the root of that word brings a lot of bad memories, so when ever its said its
like a form of disrespect to African Americans. According to the article The Long
Shadow of Slavery Over Women and Girls slavery in past has not only effected
society, its effected religion as well. Since in certain religions like Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam traditionally accepted slavery in differing forms it has
effected these religions in various ways today. “Historically, slave-owners sexually
exploited enslaved women and girls, coerced them to give birth, and separated
families.” even in bible times slavery existed that goes to show that history always
repeats it self. Some people still consider slavery a cause of African Americans still
not getting treated equally. As a result of that there’s things like racial
discrimination that Still goes on in our society today. According to
Racism in the United States, “Racism in the United States has been a major issue in
America since the colonial era. Historically, the country has been dominated by a
settler society of religiously and ethnically. Racial stratification has even occurred in
employment, housing, education and government.” although things like that don’t
happen as much any more it still happens. So slavery still effects today’s society in a
variety of ways.
In closing when the word slavery is brought up things like pain, suffering,
misery, and Redemptions are still remembered. Although it took many causes and
effects like financial issues, a civil war, feuds between black and white people, and
slave rebellion. Through all the pain and suffering as a result of all that African
American slaves finally got the freedom, respect, and equal rights that was well
deserved for many years.
